During the workshop, 9th-grade students presented architectural and design projects using reusable materials to promote sustainability.
The United Nations Information Centre for the Gulf Countries (UNIC Manama) and UN-Habitat participated on 23 November in a workshop addressing sustainability, including architecture and urban planning, organized by the French International School of Bahrain MLF.
During the workshop, 9th-grade students presented architectural and design projects using reusable materials to promote sustainability. The session also discussed the role of Art as a tool of social change, including in promoting sustainable architecture.
"The workshop was a great opportunity to raise awareness on the importance of public and green spaces, climate change, and the value of urban heritage and urban regeneration, among others. The students' projects show great creativity in practically addressing sustainable architecture and urban planning challenges," said Ahmed Ben Lassoued, UNIC Manama Director.
"Young people living in fast-growing cities will play a crucial role in shaping the future of these urban areas. Integrating sustainability issues in school learning will contribute not only to forming a mass of informed decision-makers but also to starting change in the present. I was thrilled to learn about the projects and how the students understand how cities can make use of nature" said Fernanda Lonardoni, Head of UN-Habitat Bahrain.
The United Nations Country Team in Bahrain's support has brought forward the sustainable urban development agenda in the Kingdom, a densely populated and highly urbanized country, including through programs and interventions that contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 11 – sustainable cities and communities.
